Katelyn Chan
Hey! I’m Katelyn, an incoming Sophomore at UCSD studying Cognitive Science. This summer I interned at the SLAC GISMo group working under Xiaochu and Dave on Electricity Price Forecasting. I learned about the purpose behind forecasting electricity prices, in which we strive to minimize risks and maximize profits, as well as the framework of the process utilizing different models. I received hands-on experience with the linear-time-invariant model to predict a month’s electricity prices using previous price, temperature, and load data, which we tested on using various datasets. Through many trial and error runs, I gradually began enhancing my familiarity with Python and unexpectedly developing an interest in this field of work.
From the friendly—and funny— staff members to the cutting-edge research, the GISMo team not only prioritizes the goal of creating accessible renewable energy but also strives to create an inclusive and uplifting learning environment, inspiring the interns (including myself) to stay curious and pursue their intellectual interests!
